What this Markdown preview does
Type Markdown on the left and see the rendered result on the right, updating as you type. The renderer implements GitHub Flavored Markdown, so tables, task lists, strikethrough and fenced code blocks with syntax highlighting all work.
Markdown is not HTML
Markdown is a lightweight syntax that compiles to HTML. It is deliberately not a superset of HTML: raw HTML inside a Markdown document is passed through by most renderers, which is convenient and also a security risk. Never render Markdown from an untrusted source without sanitising the output first.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Markdown and HTML?
Markdown is a concise plain-text syntax for structure such as headings, lists and links. It is compiled into HTML for display. HTML is the final markup and can express far more, at the cost of being verbose and harder to write by hand.
Which flavour of Markdown is supported?
GitHub Flavored Markdown (GFM), which is the CommonMark specification plus tables, task lists, strikethrough and autolinks. It is what GitHub, GitLab and most modern documentation sites use.
Is raw HTML in my Markdown a security risk?
It can be. If you render Markdown that came from an untrusted user without sanitising the HTML output, embedded scripts or event attributes can execute. Sanitise the rendered HTML on the server before displaying it to others.
Is my content uploaded?
No. Parsing and rendering happen entirely in your browser, so drafts never leave your device.
