What this counter measures

Paste text to see its character count (with and without spaces), word count, sentence and paragraph counts, line count and an estimated reading time. Everything updates as you type.

Why the limits exist

Most platforms truncate silently, so the count matters before you publish:

  • Search result titles are truncated at roughly 60 characters and meta descriptions at roughly 155.
  • A post on X is limited to 280 characters; SMS is 160 per segment.
  • A meta description that is too long is simply cut off in the results, which loses the call to action.

Frequently asked questions

Do spaces count as characters?

They do in most platform limits, which is why this tool reports both the total and the count excluding spaces. When checking a limit, use the total including spaces.

How is reading time calculated?

It divides the word count by a typical adult reading speed of about 200 to 250 words per minute. Treat it as an estimate, since speed varies widely with content and reader.

How long should a meta description be?

Aim for about 150 to 155 characters. Longer descriptions are truncated in search results, so put the key message and the call to action in the first 120 characters.

Is my text uploaded?

No. Counting happens in your browser only, so draft content and private notes stay on your device.
