What gzip compression is for

Gzip compresses text using the DEFLATE algorithm, typically shrinking JSON, HTML, CSS, logs and other repetitive text by 60 to 90 percent. This tool compresses text and gzip data in your browser, and can show the result as Base64 so it can be pasted into a text-only field.

Compression is not encryption

Compressed data is not protected. Anyone can decompress it with no key. Compress to save space or bandwidth, never to keep something secret.

Frequently asked questions

Is gzip compression the same as encryption?

No. Gzip is a lossless compression format with no key. Anyone holding the bytes can decompress them, so it provides no confidentiality. Encrypt separately if the data is sensitive.

Why is the output shown as Base64?

Gzip produces binary data, which cannot be pasted into a JSON field, a URL or a plain text editor without corruption. Base64 turns those bytes into safe ASCII text so they can travel through text-only channels.

How much smaller will my data get?

It depends entirely on redundancy. Repetitive text such as JSON or logs often shrinks by 80 to 90 percent. Data that is already compressed, such as a JPEG or a zip file, will barely shrink at all and may even grow slightly.

Does it work for large files?

It is designed for text you paste into a browser tab, using the native CompressionStream API where available. Very large inputs are limited by your available memory rather than by a server-side size limit.
